It comes with a heavy heart and a difficult decision that I am closing the Charmed Butterfly.

During these economic times it is rather quite difficult to sell handmade items in a small town such as Scottsville.

I am sad because I think this is exactly the kind of thing Scottsville needs!

Most of the sales came from tourists with *some* repeat customers but the support was or is not enough and Artists started to pull away.

I looked at all the options to stay open  to no avail. I have decided to take my life into a different direction.

Our Artists will be moving out their creations by June 15th – so any shopping you would like to do go ahead and get it done…

Thank you for your support this last year and your patronage!

It’s been awhile since I have written about things that are going on -

We have 2 new Artists!

Ashley Harris from Harris Creations  who does some amazing paintings like this one:

It’s pretty isn’t it? It’s not at our store but she has some other beautiful paintings hanging on our walls.

And then we had added Southern Creations by Michelle  - she does amazing cards but also paper crafts, canvas art and more.

It’s a must see!

Mother’s Day is May 13th – and we definitely have something for mom’s and mom’s to be – and grandma’s and more so please be sure to check out our selections :)

We also have graduation coming up in the area – Fluvanna for instance is May 19th and Albemarle County is June 1oth -

We have teacher gifts and graduation gifts!!!

These rubber duck soaps are available but need to be custom ordered :) so send me an email – give me a call or better yet come into the store!

And now for some nitty gritty other business stuff – I need a vacation – just a little one.. just a few days to rejuvenate. I will be attending my future-daughter-in-law’s graduation on May 19th – and I don’t really have anyone to cover the store – so there is the chance we will be closed.

My vacation however will definitely start May 20th thru  May 23rd – the store will be closed during those days but will re-open on May 24th.

A note about the Art Center – some of you may noticed the space next to the store is available for rent again. I could no longer afford to keep it open as the community participation for art classes just was not there. BUT I will still have art classes and open studio for you if you are interested. I will be working on that schedule soon – I just need to work out some more kinks!

I am also already working on our 1st year anniversary celebration which is July 1st – and much more such as Tour of Scottsville and other happenings in our town that I am not in charge of but you may not know about and Scottsville is actually a fun place to be :)

Hope to see you soon – shop local – shop handmade at the Charmed Butterfly!

This months we are showing off the fantastic work of Dixie Harden. Dixie Harden perhaps known for painting on slate also does fantastic work when it comes to Portraits. Some of her work have been earned themselves a ribbon in competitions and some will soon be entered into competitions!

So come in and take a tour of Dixie Harden’s work – only a few selective items are for sale as most of the portraits already have rightful owners!

But come in and check out Dixie’s truly amazing talent!

We have our first Granny Square :) I hope that you feel inspired to crochet your own – if you don’t know how to make a granny square – then I would love to teach you!

When the Afghan is finished I would like to donate it!

Friday’s from 3:30 – 4:30 Come in and crochet Granny Squares with me.

But who exactly is this Piet Mondrian?

Piet Mondrian was born in 1872 in the Netherlands. His father was an art teacher and though Piet was introduced and encouraged artistically very early in his life.

He studied at  the Academy for Fine Art in Amsterdam and just like his father, became a teacher.

His early paintings  consisted of being naturalistic and mostly of landscapes.

Piet Mondrian moved to Paris in 1911 and influence of Picasso and Georges Braque became apparent in his work.

Mondrian was visiting the Netherlands in 1914 – and forced to stay due to the conflict of WWI. He was able to return to Paris in 1918 – and lived there until 1938.

During those years his grid-style emerged and ultimately it is what he’s known for.

1938 he moved to London and two years later moved to New York.

Piet Mondrian passed away due to complications of pneumonia in 1944.

For more detailed history on Piet Mondrian you can go to The Art Story: Artist Piet Mondrian

Everyone – All ages can join us on Saturday March 10, 2012 between the hours 12:00 thru 5:00 – and create your own Piet Mondrian.

Cost $8.00 per person

So I have this grand idea that if in our community each person crochets one granny square – how many blankets can we make?

Even if you don’t know how to crochet – I will teach you how to make a granny square!

So on Friday’s from 3:30 – 4:30 Come in and crochet Granny Squares with me.

The goal is to get enough Granny Squares together so that we can then create an afghan that will then be donated to one of one of our hospitals or an organization that could use them.

I will provide the material! It’s free – all I ask is for your time and come and create granny squares with me!!

If you can’t make it but still want to contribute – drop off your finished granny square at our location!

If you want to learn how to crochet a granny square and can’t make it at that time – please contact me so that we can set a time!

This is a community project and I would love to see everyone’s input!

~ Petra ~

Happy Sunday Afternoon!

We have added a few more classes to our weekly schedule! You can see our schedule here: Classes

I have changed the Tuesday Crochet Class to a Beginner’s Class! It will really just be the basic learning how to make a chain, single crochet, half-double crochet, and double crochet! We will also discuss what yarn is best suited for your project.

Ever heard of Amigurumi? No? That’s ok.. but you have heard of crochet stuffed animals. This will be for folks who have an understanding of crochet – meaning you can read a patter and understand the stitches! This will be on Thursday afternoon – before Bring a Parent art session.

Do you like Granny Squares? Want to learn how to make them? Come in and crochet Granny Squares with me to create an afghan that will then be donated to one of our local hospitals. I will provide the material! It’s free – all I ask is for your time and come and create granny squares with me!!

Project Upcyle – lets turn pants into purses – t-shirts into dresses – and whatever else we can come up with. Saturdays from 2:30-4:30 – we have sewing machines!!

On Sunday’s I am adding a jewelry workshop – so come in and create your own pair of earrings, a necklace or a bracelet! This starts at 1:00 and finishes at 2:30

Love our classes? But you have a scheduling issue?

Let me know and I can add/change days and time (except for Monday!)

I am also working on our schedule for other activities we will be offering in March so stay tuned!!!

The great thing about Art is that you can have a blast by yourself or with other people. Sometimes we prefer to work alone but at other times having people around and just create is awesome. Today at the Art Center we had an impromptu Vase and Glass Painting Session – it was a blast!

Are these not fantastic? And absolutely usable.. in about 3 weeks once they have cured. So much fun and so much room for the imagination…
